It is in this aspect that we are on different sides, then. First, that the
New York Times uses hacking synonymously with cracking doesn't make the
two terms synonymous. Second, I am of the belief that the general public
sees hacking as what really is cracking because primarily of the media.
Third, I think that it is the media's role to re-educate the general
uninitiated public. If it is not the role of media to do this, then at
least media is what seems to be in the best position to do so.

Perhaps we can start the reeducation with people like you, who turn out to
actually know how to differentiate a hacker from a cracker?

Please let me know what you think. And cc your editor, as well. I know for
a fact that a significant bulk of the IT community is worried about (1)
the hyping up of skript kiddie groups like AsianPride, and (2) the messing
up of the terms "hacker" and "cracker". I hope the Inquirer can join us in
our crusade to set things straight.
