aha. but, just because they are supposedly harmless there is still loss
involved when a system goes down or is defaced.

the main loss is time. first of all systems adminstrators like you and
me are usually overworked and underpaid. if you crack into a system you
added to the headache of the poor systems administrators who are already
loaded with work. take for example mozcom, they have competent administrators
there. i am sure that the people in PLUG can see that. however, no matter
how secure a system is it is never absolutely secure. (remember the most
secure system is one that is turned off, locked up, tied in a box ...)

systems adminstrators do not have the time to bother about every single
deal of the network. or monitor every single log in the system. it is just
too much effort.

i agree that a certain level of security must be maintained. but, cracking
into a system is not the proper way to go about it. if they were really
"white hatters" they should properly inform the administrator if not
post the possible vulnerability in bugtraq or possibly PH-CERT.
