I wonder how they can argue that, as virus signatures come from code
that is found in the wild and can be analyzed and a signature derived by
anyone who cares to do so.

Unless that implies that the antivirus makers actually MAKE some of
these viruses themselves! <conspiracy-theorist-grin/>.
