My classmates who attended the launching of Windows XP RC1 and the
introductory seminar of .Net last August said that VB.Net would be the
cornerstone of ASP, making it "truly" web-based and able.

They also said that the upcoming utilities included in VS.Net produce
a common compiled code - which they called "byte-code" (similar to
Java's terminology). Too bad it would only work on the Microsoft-
supported platforms (though Microsoft claimed it's considering to
make them run in FreeBSD, but I don't care...). There are people in
the mailing list who also attended the seminar (I didn't) so they can
say more about Visual Studio.Net and Microsoft's .Net initiative
(which is a clone of Sun ONE - that started way too long ago when they
released Java). Maybe VS.Net is indeed orthogonal to what VB was or is.
