Actually, *nix and Un*x were created years ago because AT&T owned the
trademark to "Unix", and defended it when needed.  When people wrote
articles or whatever, they found it easier to type "Un*x" everywhere
than to include "Unix is a registered trademark of AT&T" at the bottom
of the article.

"Unix" is still a trademark, I believe that SCO owns it these days.
