Linux is also a better multiuser OS than XP(well, this is just a matter of
opinion).
But as a matter of fact, Linux can be deployed in lower-end PCs in
contrast to that of XP which practically needs a recent processor and lots
of memory. Our home TCP/IP Ethernet network uses a Linux server whose
modest hardware include an Intel 486DX4-100, 16 MB of RAM, and a harddisk.
It can saturate its 10MBPS NIC. I will be even adding up probably a dialup
line. Performance is highly satisfactory for a dedicated server. BTW, I
am using Slackware Linux which requires very little memory(I even got it
to work on a system with only 8MB RAM and it was an excellent client
running Lynx and PINE).
