I also did a check using Netcraft:

The site www.hotmail.com is running Microsoft-IIS/5.0 on Windows 2000
The site lw8fd.law8.hotmail.msn.com is running Microsoft-IIS/5.0 on Windows
2000.

When you first log-on you get to see your folders and
some advertisement - the link to your folders points to this
address: 216.33.240.23

Netcraft says:
The site 216.33.240.23 is running Apache/1.2.6 on FreeBSD

As to why they're not using their products on Hotmail -
maybe (speculating) they haven't finished their migration
yet? Or maybe (speculating again) their engineers did find
that using FreeBSD and other non-MS products (QMail?) was
the more effective solution. Or maybe (another speculation)
their engineers found out that having a heterogenous
network made up of Microsoft products and Open-Source/Free
software is the best solution. I don't know. :) But if
they indeed are relying on other products (QMail?) when
they have their own mail server MS Exchange (btw, I have
no knowledge of MS Exchange - WinNT/2000 - yes, Exchange -
no), then it's a big 'black-eye' to them.
