Walter,

       i  am not sure of the directory setup of mandrake but in redhat
       linux, i configure it at /etc/X11/XF86Config. Open that file in
       your  text  editor (i use pico) and go to the lower part of the
       file,  where  you  can  find  "svga  server" and "accel server"
       change the mode there to 800x600 instead of the 640x480
