From what i remember, when i was working with an ISP way back 1996, i was
a tech support then, our company
bought a DEC Alpha server worth almost 500,000 k (bare) no hdd, just the
basics with 256 memory. It's expensive coz of its 64 bit architecture.
DEC Alpha is a very powerful server. 1 DEC Alpha could manage a Medium
Scale ISP. Our 1 DEC Alpha handled more than 300 domains,
1,800 dial-up users, our mail server, authentication server, accounting
server etc.

Currently i guess, it will cost 200 to 300K at least for 1 server with 1
hotswap scsi HDD that's it. Compare to a 4 x 32 bit servers that would cost
around
120K max clustered. I don't know, but for me this 4 servers is just
equivalent to 1 DEC Alpha with regards to performance.

DEC Alpha is never cheap. When we bought for the OS only for 2000
compliancy it worth 158,000.00 for the fucking OS only.

Yes, Dec Alpha is available locally.

This is just my view, m open for comments.

Thank you.
