i suggest you get Intel's or AMD's now. they
beat the crap out of alphas in terms of raw
flops. however, they still have a better arch.
that makes it much much more scalable (CPUs
per box - this technology is being using by
Intel for its 64bit MPU line. hehehe.)

besides it really depends on what the application
for the cluster is going to be. you might as
well invest in the network interconnect as this
is the main problem with cluster. also you
can get dual/quad x86 boxes for the price
of an alpha node.
