For your workstation(s), you need to have PuTTY for you to access SSH. If you're using Linux as your workstation(s), well, AFAIK, you don't need to have Samba in your server. But the most important of this one is, you have to connect the server and your workstation(s) properly. After that and if you think you already done with the basic networking setup, try pinging the server and your workstation(s) if they are connected.
