Hint: edit your /etc/rc.d/rc.modules file and uncomment the line referring
to the appropriate module for your network card. It is grouped according
to classes of cards, including sound cards, network cards, and other cards
that I don't use often. BTW, many have default parameters that would just
require you to uncomment a single line for an appropriate card.  It is
necessary sometimes to make specifications, though. Also, they have
comments that will tell you which line is for what card.

Oh, about network cards, I love NE2000 and compatible ones. They are so
easy to use in Slackware, especially the PCI ones. I'm currently using an
old ISA one, though, since my 486 doesn't have PCI slots. But still,
they're fun under Slack. :)
