There's some hope this will soon be fixed, because AbiWord recently had 
a breakthrough in reliable RTF import and export -- and that project has
compatible licensing.  One of the nice things about open source
programming is that, once one project solves a algorithm problem, most
of the time everyone else can use the solution, too.   

(Even when licensing or other obstacles stand in the way of literally 
borrowing code, the other projects can still benefit greatly by studying
a successful implementation with freely available source code.)

About 40 seconds on my antique VAIO.  (Everyone has better computers
than I do.  ;->  )

Yes, indeed.  There's a big hole, there.  If I didn't suck at studying
other people's code, I'd probably try to find time to help.
