ina,
you can make rpms out of the source tarball mrsam provides you. do an rpm -ta courier-x.y.z.tgz. still, you have to do this as a non root user though meaning you have to create your own rpm build directory tree with an ordinary user. this is detailed easily in the faqs found in the courier website. courier is simple to configure. if you're using /etc/passwd of rh7.2 (for your user list) like i do, remove all modules in /usr/lib/courier-imap/etc/authdaemonrc's authmodulelist and leave "authpam" as the only remaining module. i had a hard time combining it with other modules. if you're using ldap, leave ldap...etc. also, leave /usr/lib/courier-imap/etc/imapd's AUTHMODULES to authdaemon.
note that each of us posted different ways to solve your problem...you can use authshadow, authdaemon and authpam. one of my first installations was using authldap directly since i do virtual hosts with postfix as well. in all my installations however, i've always used authdaemon. i dunno why. =) maybe because it's the first thing that worked for me.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]">hi!
as much as possible, i dont want to use packages. i want to install
from the source tarball. anyway, i started from scratch again and
followed the instructions (installing courier-imap) from
http://howtos.eoutfitters.net/email/#installation. I was able to run
imapd but my imap client (netscape messenger) always gets a failed
login, though the username/password im using can login(ssh and telnet)
to the server. i configured it with
./configure \
--without-certdb \
--without-authpam \
--without-authldap \
--without-authpwd \
--without-authmysql \
--without-authpgsql \
--without-authvchkpw \
--without-authcram \
--without-authdaemon \
--without-authcustom
and my users are supposed to be authenticated from the /etc/ shadow
file.

And I
wonder why you'd rather use xinetd. I recommend you launch the
Courier
IMAP daemon stand-alone, instead. It has provisions for security, and
should scale much better with multiple connections (versus through
some
superserver).
