Disclaimer: I'm a Window Maker kind of guy, and have never dealt with this sort of thing. This may help for KDE/kwm: http://www.kde.org/documentation/faq/desktop.html As to GNOME, unlike the case with KDE, there's no standard default window manager (http://www.labs.redhat.com/gug/users-guide/wm.html), and so I would think how you "specify a desktop", or even whether there are multiple desktops at all, would probably depend on the window manager.
