I was just reading this article on ZDnet about Intel Linux server consolidation (e.g. running multiple instances of Linux on a single host, ala the IBM mainframe thing):
http://techupdate.zdnet.com/techupdate/stories/main/0,14179,2870157,00.html Anyway, this feature would seem useful for ISP's or ASP's or similar hosting providers who want to provide a full machine for a single user but don't want to put out lots of $$$ to buy a rack-full of servers. Anyway it seems the SW-Soft's Virtuozzo and VMware's ELX Server are the big players in the Intel server consolidation arena. However they all failed to take note of one, fairly good, free alternative: User-Mode Linux! I'm actually gonna UML soon.. the neat-o functionality of multiple Linux instances on a single box (without the overhead of full hardware emulation ala Bochs) is too good to pass up.
