Active Directory is one way Microsoft Corporation locks in its customer base. You can deliberately avoid enabling it on W2K Server (http://www.winnetmag.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=15528) or sidestep it (http://www.data-based-systems.com/downloadables/LinuxSambaWithWindows2000.htm). When last I heard, the smbmount software (part of Samba) used to get access to Network Neighbourhood shares didn't include support for Microsoft's mutant version of Kerberos or Active Directory, as of Samba 2.2.x. But, as the second link says, you can connect pretending to be a pre-W2K MS-Windows client. > Desktop Hardware: Pentium Celeron, 64 MB DRAM, 4 GB hard disk, S3 > Trio 3D 2X video Adapter. How about you at least double that amount of RAM? You'll be happier. > 1. Replacement for MS Office 2000, that would be able to read and > modify existing Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. What Office suite is > recommended ? Most reliable compatibility is achieved by Sun Star Office 6.0 (not perfect, but close). OpenOffice.org is obviously also good. > 2. Replacement for MS Visio 2000. Is there an equivalent on Linux ? Not exactly. There's dia and kivio. Those are smaller, lighter, less complex diagramming packages. > Does it [Samba] have the GUI utility for the end users ?
