Well in my experience, software RAID5 with 3 Ultra-160 drives on a Linux box with a 500MHz processor puts out MORE I/O's per second than hardware RAID5 with 12 Ultra-160 drives on a Sun StorEdge A1000 array. CPU utilization is virtually nil except when rebuilding a failed drive, when it's about 10-20%.
