cool.  thanks for the pointers.  very helpful.  i was operating from
old data.  thanks for setting me straight.  some time ago ian.sison
suggested just going with the RPM versions.  at the time i was building
from source because i needed DBG support in there.  at some point
though, i stopped doing that and followed his advice.  since then
i've been out of touch with the source :).

thanks again.  just downloaded stuff, now going back to compiling
from source :).
