Posted this, i did, many times before: "Embracing RPM technology does not mean you have to give up compiling from tarballs". There is something called SOURCE RPMS, which contain 1. the original manufacturer's tarballs 2. patches to Makefiles, source code to make it compile on your distro 3. SPEC file which contains batch commands to build the package itself. If you're in need of tweaking source options, then by all means do so, _INSIDE THE RPM SPEC FILE_. This way you only type your commands once and redeployment to another host (with your tweaks) is as easy as an RPM -Uvh. Powerful, this RPM tool is. Not well understood by many, it is.
