Well since you're already using Emacs, why not just open a shell buffer (M-x
shell)? You get all the multi-tasking, plus you can cut and paste in and out
of other Emacs buffers without using the mouse.

The really neat thing about screen is that it allows you to detach your
session (ctrl-a d), log off, and then resume your work from a different
terminal later on. Processes continue in the background, of course.
