Compaq Presario's are relatively Linux-friendly.

I installed Slackware 8.1 on a Compaq Presario 12XL312 (Pentium III
700MHz, 64MB RAM, 5GB HD) just recently. The Slackware laptop was
running on an SGI XFS filesystem initially using the patched 2.4.18
included with the Slackware CD. I then got a 2.4.19 kernel, patched it
with RML preempts, LMSensors2 and SGI XFS, recompiled the kernel to
support ACPI (APM too should be put it in for X to use power
management), PCMCIA cardbus support, USB Host to Host network connection
and a couple or more kernel configs. A few quick edits would be required
for HD power management and to turn of the display after a set time of
inactivity (hdparm and setterm).

The touchpad was functional in console (using gpm and a few quick edits
to /etc/rc.d/rc.gpm) even in KDE 3.0. Sound is handled by the
via82cxxx_audio module. I didn't have time to test/configure the built
in modem since i don't have a dialup internet connection.

That was until my father said to be that he'd like windows back in _his_
laptop. It was good while it lasted... :)
