Doc, Stallman has explained this at length on the GNU website at: http://www.gnu.org/gnu/why-gnu-linux.html His arguments basically boil down to the fact that he does not want the use of the Linux name to become diluted by the corporate interests that have swarmed around it in recent years, who wish to stifle all of the freedom talk, ideology, and idealism that the GNU Project represents, which, after all, helped give the Linux kernel its reason to be. It is not so much grubbing for credit as it is to keep the moderates on their toes, keeping them from becoming "seduced by the Dark Side" as it were. He insists on GNU/Linux for the same reason that he refuses to use the term 'open source software' and insists on the term 'Free software'. -- Rafael R.
