Or make uninstall if you have the makefile of the old version, or if you installed it from rpm, check first if its installed, uninstall it before installing the .tar.gz package.

Have you installed it? If not, check your path. It's possible that
there's an older gcc somewhere in a more important entry in your path
that's being run before the newer one you've compiled. If you want to be
sure, specify an explicit path t o the gcc binary that you want to use.
