All of this is implied in your denigration of "the left". Wow. Now THAT'S baseless extrapolation. > For the record, the operating system is GNU, Linux is the kernel. By rights we should all be saying > GNU *except* when referring specifically to the Linux kernel. What the heck, "Debian GNU" does have a nice ring to it - short and nice. Why not just drop the Linux word? (You do take your own arguments about OS naming seriously, don't you?) Linus probably wouldn't raise half the ruckus RMS did (out of courtesy you should at least make it clear though that you're doing it as a 'branding' move and not out of disrespect or spite). Why "bend over backwards" when no one seems to be insisting on such? Why all the need for "extreme politeness"? I am not aware of any legal requirement that the Linux source code has to be called such and believe that by and large people just do so because the Linux name has marketable appeal. > heard of that either? How about AtheOS/Linux? Never heard of that? > Thats odd; AtheOS (a BeOS clone) does use Linux as it's underlying > kernel... That's odd, the Atheos FAQ (http://www.atheos.cx/faq.php3) categorically states that Atheos is NOT a BeOS clone, and *even a cursory reading* (which you did not seem to even bother doing) would suffice to reveal that it most certainly DOES NOT RUN on top of the Linux kernel. If you are referring to Bill Hayden's efforts, then that project is called Cosmoe (http://www.cosmoe.com/). There is NO SUCH THING as "Atheos/Linux". How in the world did you come up with that??? You're not trying to pull a fast one on me, are you? Because if so, you've picked the wrong subject - I've always been interested in AtheOS and BeOS and have closely monitored news on related developments. Bill Hayden has described his merging of the AtheOS/BeOS API and porting of the OpenTracker/Deskbar window manager to run on Linux as a "fork of Atheos" (http://www.geocrawler.com/archives/3/2311/2002/3/100/8215112/) but it is really more a port of certain elements running on top of the Atheos kernel. Kurt has always wanted to have full control over the direction of development of the Atheos kernel and considering his already disappointed reaction (http://www.geocrawler.com/mail/msg.php3?msg_id=9215548&list=2311) with what Bill Hayden has done (though I think he should not be feeling this way because after all he GPL'ed Atheos), he would probably go ballistic over a project that uses "Atheos/Linux" as a name. _ Philippine Linux Users Group.
