thanks for the help gerald,

it works fine in -- -depth 8 now at 1024x768 using the same version of 
xf86..
i worked it over by playing with the /etc/X11/XF86Config file..

the display speed is good, no quality images though, but fair enough and fun 
to use for terminal access..
