there is a linux-thinkpad mailing list.  you might search the 
archives.  also, this:

there's a patched XFree 3.3.x there.  but it's old.  probably not
right for you.  anyway, if you install XFree 3.3.x (the stock
one that comes with your distribution) instead of 4.x you can 
get 16 bit images.  it's just dog slow.  it's *good*enough*
for surfing and most things, really.  just don't do things like:

cat /var/log/messages 

in an XTerm or anything else that changes part of the display a 
lot.  the thinkpad is still usable, it just takes a few seconds
to get control back.  if you must do something like that (or you
do it by mistake), try to minimize the xterm or move to a different
desktop.  it's OK doing that *if* the screen does not need to be
updated.  there's no delay at all that way.
