Indeed. To generalize, it actually pays to know about the alternative
software packages that provide similar, if not the same, services.
With Free Software and Open Software, we do have a wide selection to
choose from. And it is this availability of choices, this freedom that
enables us to be more flexible in our solutions.

This is one of the best reasons to keep on trying new software! :)

If we turn a blind eye to what else is out there, then we're missing
all the possibilities that they bring with them. Of course, we don't
have all the time in the world to try them -all- out, so it does make
sense to try a number of them and then choose the best fit. This isn't a
marriage either, so we can easily stick with one, all the while trying
out others from time to time. If another program comes along that is
more suitable, there is nothing that really binds us to the first
choice. Well, there will be "emotional" as well as time investment to
deal with, but... :)   we're after what works best for us.
