More like language translation. PostScript is quite
high level.

It is my opinion that most all of the XML-based specs are
quite lame! Even SVG, notwithstanding the fact that the Batik
renderer itself is pretty cool, is a very verbose spec that
takes way too much space to describe simple stuff. Don't even
get me started on the terrible XML manipulation APIs like DOM
and XSLT.
XML is probably good for certain niches, but it most
certainly is not 'sliced bread'. It's just too "lowest
common denominator" to be appropriate in many specialized
cases.
