If you think of it from a document processing perspective, compared to
LaTeX, PostScript IS very low level, and can get quite hairy. Who would
be insane enough to write a whole term paper in raw PS?

As usual, it's the design by committee effect. XML itself and XHTML/CSS
are the only current products of the W3C that I can name that don't
suffer from this illness. The other XML-based standards they've produced
are as excessively verbose and ugly as SGML/DSSSL and other committee
designed standards.
