Old laptops with no CD-ROMs are always an interesting challenge.  The 
case divides into two sub-cases:

1.  Unit has a PCMCIA port.  In that case, your easiest option is to
borrow a PCMCIA ethernet card, and install from either a machine on your 
local network or the Internet.

2.  Unit lacks PCMCIA ports.  Then, do one of these:

o  PLIP install.  http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/mini/PLIP.html
o  Installation using only floppies.  Slackware is good for this.
o  Remove the laptop's hard drive, put it in a desktop unit, do the
   install, and move it back.

In any event, always research what's known about Linux on your
make/model of laptop via the Linux on Laptops Web pages:
