Sorry, I can't cite any on-line reference. A friend and I were discussing hardware, and he reminded me of it: I'd known the reason why signal and ground signals are deliberately alternated in ribbon cables, but just didn't remember that when I heard about the rounded cables. It's possible that the extra crosstalk doesn't make enough of a difference to worry about, if the cables are relatively short. I wouldn't know.
