chkconfig --del postfix
man chkconfig for what that does. basically, it fixes the entries in
/etc/rc.d/rc.*.d so that postfix doesn't start anymore. there are more
options (you can start it in runlevel 3 but not runlevel 5, etc),
but doing just the above should make it stop running.
it'll still be installed, but at least the service won't be running anymore.
note: i don't use mutt and i'm not sure what the relationship is between
mutt and postfix in Mandrake 8.2, but ithink it likely that just disabling
postfix in the startup scripts won't solve your problem. if that's the
case and you want postfix back up, just do:
chkconfig --add postfix
most likely you *will* have to get postfix correctly configured. to do that,
edit /etc/postfix/main.cf. search for the myhostname entry and set that
to a valid name (i think even something like localhost.localdomain.com
might work, ian will correct me if that's not true :). you might also want
to set the mydomain entry to some domain.
if you don't want to do any of that, maybe you could use some other
mailer? pine or one of the emacs things (no doubt sacha can point
you in productive directions) or one of the graphical ones (i like
evolution, although KDE is good too, i use both).
