Among other approaches you can consider using your scripting language of
choice (Python, Perl, et al). You can create an alias so that your
MTA/MDA pipes all messages to a certain user (maybe
[EMAIL PROTECTED]) through your script. At least in Postfix this is
done by making the alias entry something like

    packages:       "|/usr/bin/packagetracker"

Your script will parse the message and query your database server, and
will also handle sending off the reply by email using your MTA. Python
and Perl, at least, have a lot of tools buist in or available as modules
to do all these component tasks.
