I'll try it sometime. i already know ssh. does stunnel have its own
keepalive separate from SO_KEEPALIVE? as i noted in my reply
to ian, the reason i need keepalive that i actually know how to
tweak is, i move from network to network and i'd like the tunnel
to die when i'm not connected. i've had problems where, the network
goes down (or i walk off to another network), and hours later when
i look at netstat, or ps auxw | grep ssh i see that the ssh connection
is still "live".

anyway, the original question was mainly theoretical, i've got a
crontab+bash script thing that does all that for me now.
