there are probably smarter sftp clients out there.  but i don't have the
time to figure it all out.  instead, i would just set up private key
auth to the box. then just tunnel through to ftp using whatever ftp
clients have the features (recursion) you need.

hmmm, actually, i'm too lazy to even do that.  usually what i do is
just tar up the whole directory (from ssh), then sftp the tar file.
