That's not right.  Squid is a HTTP proxy and hence cannot be used to force
people to use it as a proxy for anything other than HTTP.

Does it try to download the strip itself or does it just present a URL?

Yes it can.  All you have to do is exert a little effort in looking for the
answer.  Go to support.ximian.com, type "proxy" in the question box and #3
will contain the answer.  Took me 2 minutes max.
