nbtscan, that's what we use...
 
 
but this would only scan NetBIOS name information only, or those currently using the SMB protocol

hmmm... i haven't encountered such app before (on GNU/Linux),
try to google search for IP scanners.

but you can create a script that will ping a range of IP addresses
and log the IP address to a text file on success.

have you tried using 3com's network supervisor* (win/nix based)?
it will scan the network, then provides you with an illustration of
the actual physical/logical connection between servers/workstations.
and as well as their IP add / netbios name, etc.

*works well on 3com NICs/switches.


i'm also been looking for its GNU/Linux Counterpart, only Nagios
comes close except on the autodetection part (or i'm just missing
something?)
