does the CD not include the module for the USB device?
(not sure what that would be, i haven't used a USB external
storage drive before).
what modules would you need for it? maybe usb,
usb-uhci/ohci/whatever, usb-storage?
if you pop the usb device in, does dmesg show any devices?
it seems that a lot of external devices (usb external storage,
memory sticks, etc) are automatically FAT32. how did you try to
mount it? as mount -t vfat <device> <mountpoint>?

P.S. actually, i doubt that any of my post will help since i'm sure you
know what you're doing. i'm just pointing things out hoping you'll
fix it, post a solution, and i and everyone else learn something
new :).
