After all that, I belatedly realise that I didn't even answer the
question you actually _asked_.  Damn, sorry.  I've been wrestling with
all three of the message store formats, lately, and the matter's been 
on my mind.

ReiserFS is a really good filesystem, _generally_ speaking, for
situations where you have a lot of little files.  This is because one of
the reasons for writing it in the first place was to have a good
filesystem for Usenet news servers, which are really hell on hard disk
arrays for lots of reasons, but the multiplicity of small files is among
them.

Whether mbox vs. mh vs. Maildir actually makes a significant performance
difference depends on the individual situation.  Doing a pilot system
might be a really good idea, though.
