Those are the Large File Summit extensions. Kernel 2.4 supports it, but 
you also need a supported userland. The userland code is in glibc-2.0 
minimum, although up to now, Linux is not pure 64-bit clean (e.g. "cp" and 
company might not work on your >2GB files).

The new maximum file size is quite large. 2^63 yata eh.
