If by 'commit an mkfs' you mean reformat an already existing 3.5 reiser partition to get to a 3.6, then i believe the answer is 'yes'. reiser 3.5 on kernel 2.2 was labeled as experimental althought the quality was suitable for deployment. The 3.6 disk format was introduced in kernel 2.3 and eventually found its way to kernel 2.4 upon which was pronounced stable. So there is no upgrade path from 3.5 to 3.6 as i know it. You could however run reiser code on 2.4 over a 3.5 reiser disk format without any problems (There will be a additional print 'Using Reiserfs 3.5 disk format) when the system boots. My distro (being based on Mandrake 7.2) defaults to reiserfs 3.5 format and i use the 2.4 kernel on top of it without any problems. _ Philippine Linux Users Group.
