to all, thanks for the answer.
I am using pico as my editor. I just retyped the whole
script again with a few more # and saved it as
oracle8i instead of oracledatabase then transferred it
to /etc/rc.d/init.d and tried to do the service
<servicename> start .. it gave me a message that it is
now compliant. did the chkconfig --add oracle8i, did
the trick.
