i would like to share the ff info:
(1) by default, if you execute the command:
shell> lspci
it will display PCI devices. the first NIC on the list will be the eth0, second NIC on the list will be the eth1, so on... (assuming your NICs are all PCI devices)
(2) check your modules.conf, the ff lines can also dictate the eth_ sequence.
ie. alias eth0 3com_modulename alias eth1 intel_modulename
or you can switch in into:
ie. alias eth0 intel_modulename alias eth1 3com_modulename
