interesting.  

well if I may suggest a few more things for you..in
addition to what you are planning.  btw I dont
handle large emails at all (just a personal website
for hobby) but just some more things you might think
about; 

do you have more than 1 dns MX entry already? if not, 
you can use the machines for backup MX dns email servers
probably you can divide the incoming load as well by just 
putting same priority on MX (although i havent tried that).

you can split yur domain into subdomain.domain.com
and anotherdomain.domain.com, and assign users to 
each...probably that will be easier to route
and process (than routing users)...(although as you
said you want all users on the same domain...)

ps I dont know what horde/imp is.
