What CDR tool are you using? I have a desktop with a LITE-ON IDE CDR-RW writer which I'm using as my CDROM drive and to burn CDs as well. I've been using this for some time now and has not failed to write me a disc. I'm using XCDROAST as my burning tool.
I'm actually thinking that your laptop's drives were detected like my desktop (your CDRW drive was identified as /dev/hd*) since that CD-RW drive is built on it unless I'm very much mistaken.
