An idea, if you have a disposable laptop (486 or something)
just take a 802.11b pcmcia card and build your own.  Dont
know if this is still possible but I did it years ago with
pre-802.11b cards (but point-to-point only or "ad-hoc").  
I dont see why it wouldnt work, or at least in ad-hoc mode.

The downside is thaht the access points aren't much expensive
than the cards right now.  I see access points on sale at $80-$100 
from where I am, pcmcia cards are like $50,$60 on sale.  
And dropping.  Also, there's still ebay....
