The very same idea came to me before, but having fans and disks that break
adds too many points of failure for our network.

A friend and I are coming up with specs for a really long 802.11b link (some
20km, maybe more, over open ocean). The idea is to minimize transmission
line losses by eliminating connectors, cabling, etc. This would mean
mounting the AP right at the antenna, as close to the feed as possible.
Thoughts of waterproof tupperware-like enclosures come to mind...

Short backfire (SBF) antennas provide the highest gain and are fairly
directional. Plus they're easy to build ;) Look here for an example (url
may wrap): http://www.frars.org.uk/cgi-bin/render.pl?pageid=1076

Do you think this may result in NTC-related complications?
