Well your friend, who's a long time Linux user may doesn't know what
open-source/free software is. The nature of the software itself means
you can customize and roll-your own distro based on others work. Also,
basing it on an existing distro means third party stuff is readily
available, especially if you would be using some proprietary software
alongside your free/open-source software, like Oracle or Sun's JVM or
some other stuff. Plus, basing it on another distro means the testing of
the software/packages has been done for you by the distro your basing it
on. ;)
