now why does bayanihan linux exists? the reason here, i think, is because other distros focus on servers. i feel linux is ready for desktop use but other distros are taking time to get there. that's why bayanihan linux is for desktop. it's installation process is easier than most of the known distros. it caters to those who want to switch from their current desktop (MS) to Linux. well, i don't expect techie people to actually praise bayanihan linux. but i've heard newbies that were encourage to use bayanihan because it feels more like MS Windows. Not to mention the installation process most newbies dreaded was friendlier. all in all, it catalyzes the use of linux (not only bayanihan linux) because they feel "at home" with it. and most important of all, they become "linux users". try consider looking at it through the eyes of a newbie or an open source advocate. maybe then, you'll understand.
why not a new distro? blimey, i'd rather create linux from scratch than customizing someone else's work. but they were right. we have limited resources (people and time). anybody can create their own distro (from scratch) if they follow the directions from the website but i doubt if it can be release for public use in a short period of time. i believe the team who created bayanihan linux wanted to convert PC users as linux users not impress people... they want results not prestige.
and since the packaging of bayanihan linux is done "by us (that includes you and me)", we are free to add anything that we feel important to our users... helping them by making it easier/friendlier to use linux. now imagine if Filipino developers focus on enhancing bayanihan linux by adding their applications... no need to complicate things. we just have to address the needs of the Filipinos like:
- open office templates for forms used by Filipinos (BIR, LTO, NSO) etc.
- e-learning solution for our schools
all packaged with bayanihan linux... now that will help Filipino users decide that the distro is actually made FOR them not just BY them. simple lang naman ang kelangan ng mga ordinaryong PC users sa Pilipinas. but you have to agree that RH/MDK/DB, much less MS, will not address these needs. someone's got to do it... and they need your help. kaya nga bayanihan... di ba tulong-tulong?
siguro kung sobrang dami ng gumagamit ng linux dito sa bansa... the approach might have been different.
sana hindi magulo yung pagkakasabi ko. I'm not speaking for Bayanihan Linux pa rin ha. :)

Good point. I'd rather use RedHat than Bayanihan if that's the case.

arguments aside... ive never used bayanihan linux before, and there is nothing wrong with making a distro based on another. but reason for making a new distro is i guess to innovate or specialize, move in a diffrent direction that the original distro developers werent going or taking sometime to get there.
for those ppl (me) who know little about bayanihan please enlighten...
what has bayanihan have that other distros dont? what has it contributed to the community?
